To clarify, what has happened to Melinda that has left her not speaking? Why isn't Melinda speaking during her freshmen year? I hope that helps.

Melinda didn't speak because of a horrible incident that happened during the party before high school started. She started to open up during fourth marking period and she finally explained why she did what she did at the party to her ex best friend Racheal by writing it on a piece of paper back and forth in the library. Am i not correct?

Melinda does not speak because of an incident that occurred at the "end of summer party" in August. The incident traumatized her. Because of the incident; she made a decision which her friends couldn't understand, leading her ex-best friend to dislike her. Melinda begins opening up, after a series of event. Near the end of the book, to be specific, the fourth semester of the school year. she first tells Rachel and in the end, her Art teacher, Mr. Freeman.
