What happens around p. 55 between David and Mr. Neck? How is Melinda affected by this conversation?

Mr. Neck, both Melinda and David's History teacher, initiated a debate that was racially biased. This infuriated David, which caused him to speak up. When the tides turn against Mr. Neck as he begin losing both his tempter and the debate; he tries to use his authority to stop David from speaking his opinion and to quiet down, which was solely to show how prejudice and wrong Mr. Neck was. David is then ordered to leave the classroom, which he does. David action leaves Melinda immensely impressed, which causes her to admire him.
