I don't want to answer this question with my thoughts solely put into it but i would say the marthas are that group of girls in any school who everyone knows of. In terms of Melinda they are the popular girls, their known for their help around the community but because she rarely speaks to anyone thats something that could more or less cause her to dislike the Marthas. To the other students at school(mainly Heather) i would say their a clear neon sign of popularity that in turn could draw anyone into the "in" crowd. Heather shows her true colors when it came to the Marthas around valentines day in which she decides to break things off whith Melinda because shes negative. To put a little "ump" in this response im going to wing it with a little critical evaluation and say the marthas are just the social jocks who in turn are not necessarily jocks at all. Their popular but helpful, Melinda has no reason to hate them but she does have a reason to envy them.
This blog has been created to help students at Prep Charter High School with their summer reading assignments. Students going into 10th grade must read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Students are encouraged to use the blog as they read to help them understand the plot, characters, and larger themes of the story. While teachers will be adding questions and comments, students should also talk to each other about the book via the blog. Happy Reading!
